Bonding
Bonding is a cosmetic procedure that can improve the
appearance of teeth that are chipped, broken, cracked, stained
or with a space. With bonding, tooth-colored materials are
attached [bonded] to a tooth surface. The process can also be
used to protect root surfaces that have become exposed or
ditched, and is often used for small cavities of the front
teeth. A composite resin is used. Composite resins are plastic
materials made of glass and resin. Various color resins are
blended to approximate the colors of your natural teeth. The
resin is applied, contoured into the proper shape, and hardened
using a special light or chemical process. It is then smoothed
and polished to appear natural. Bonding may not require the use
of anesthesia and can be completed in one visit.
Enamel shaping is a process of shaping or contouring the
natural teeth to improve the overall appearance. When some teeth
are too long, or when the enamel is chipped, the dentist
modifies the teeth by removing enamel to create harmony and
balance in the mouth. When combined with bonding, it is usually
a quick and comfortable way to improve appearance that can be
seen immediately. Enamel cannot be replaced, so care must be
used and some individual cases are impossible with this method.
